1958-1966
Beetle Accelerator Pedal/Pedal Cluster Overhall
|

Our victim today is Oscar's (heads up our receiving department)
1963 Beetle. As you can see, the stock accelerator pedal has
been replaced with a "roller pedal". Roller pedals were standard
issue on all Beetles through 1957. In 1958, VW introduced
the more common flat accelerator pedal, which was used through
1979 (although there is a slight difference between the 1958-1966,
and 1967-1979 varieties). More often than not, you will find
a roller pedal installed onto 1958 and later cars when the
pedal bracket (shown with an arrow) has broke. |

Removal
of pedal assembly. Front drivers' seat has been removed for
easy access. |

The
arrow is directed at the clutch cable end unit. Keeping
the clutch pedal in the verticle position upon removal allows
for the cable to to proturde from the tunnel. Otherwise,
the cable will free itself from the clutch operating shaft
and forces you to fish the cable from the tunnel.
(A
nasty task at best!!)
It's
amazing how much crud can accumulate in this region of your
car. A wet-dry vacuum makes quick work of this mess.

particular hook in our model is in excellent shape. |

This
is an example of the shaft removed from the pedal assembly
that has seen better days. Because of excessive wear this
hook is about to break in two at the position of the arrow. |

This
clutch pedal shaft has excessive galling on the shaft itself.
Through the accumulation of dirt and debris in this region,
the result is evident, SO KEEP IT CLEAN!! |

With
the assembly resting on a bench vise, remove the pin that
affixes the clutch pedal to the clutch pedal shaft by driving
it out with a punch. Don’t forget to wear your safety glasses! |

Using
a larger punch and assembly still resting in the vise, drive
out the clutch pedal shaft. |
|
With
one hand holding the pedals upright, use your other hand to
pull the brake return spring around and under the pedal assembly
thus placing tension of the brake pedal. As you hold both
the spring and the pedals, slide the assembly into the tunnel
making sure that the brake spring rests correctly on the floor
and the clutch pedal does not deviate from the the vertical
position. Achieving this generally requires a couple of attempts.
